Common questions on metal powder injection molding materials and selection, answered by our engineers.
MIM is best suited for small, complex-shaped metal parts produced in large volumes (several thousand pieces or more) that are difficult and costly to make by machining or casting—typically medical device structural parts, locks, gears, electronic packages, and firearm parts. It performs best in the 0.1-200 g weight range.
Compared with CNC, MIM has virtually no machining dead corners on complex 3D shapes, material utilization >95%, and significantly lower per-piece cost at high volume; compared with casting, MIM offers higher dimensional accuracy (±0.3%), finer surfaces, and better density, making it suitable for high-precision net shaping.
Sintered relative density is usually ≥96%; 316L tensile strength is about 520 MPa or above; 17-4PH after aging can reach 1000 MPa with hardness 28–38 HRC; WC-Co transverse rupture strength ≥2000 MPa, with properties meeting functional and load-bearing use.
Minimum wall thickness can reach about 0.2 mm, typical dimensional tolerance about ±0.3% (relative dimension); with finishing operations it can be further tightened. It depends on material, part size, and batch stability.
Covers stainless steel (316L/304L/17-4PH/420/440C), titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V), sintered ferrous steel (Fe-2Ni/Fe-8Ni), tungsten alloy (W-Ni-Fe), cemented carbide (WC-Co) and low-expansion alloys (Kovar/Invar), with 12 typical grades included in this library.
